Hello!

My name is Julie Essex. I am a senior at WSU in my last semester before I graduate! Some things about my background is I am an advertising major, I work part time at Michelle’s Closet in Pullman and I also have an internship with the WSU athletic department helping with live game day coverage of sporting events on social media. I have helped run a few different social media accounts for a few job positions I have held. I have also worked many years in sales positions. I transferred to WSU in fall of 2021 with four semesters left till I graduated. I have learned a lot since moving to Pullman from Puyallup (which is on the west side of Washington).

I have had a good amount of experience with mobile media just like many people in my generation. Smartphones make it pretty easy to look up or learn any different aspects. I am excited to expand my understanding of mobile media.

Some of my interests are photography, I love going to the gym, living an active lifestyle, I dabble in makeup and love learning new techniques. I also love going to music festivals and immersing myself in new environments. As I advance in my academic career in pursuit of a lifelong career I have always been very interested in social media, how it influences people and how if you are really good at selling a product you can make a lot of money just using some of the apps on your phone.

A few thoughts on why I chose to take Com 481 and what I hope to achieve is I have always been interested in mobile media, how it operates and just the behind the scenes of its inner workings, along with the sociological/ psychological aspect of it as well. I hope to achieve a better understanding of mobile media and I am hoping what I learn in this class will help me make better decisions in my future as I pursue a career in social media.

Hello!

Hello! My name is Joseph. I’m a student at WSU, studying Broadcast Production and Digital Technology and Culture. I’ve been making videos since elementary school. I’ve also experimented with graphic design and photography, which I also love doing, but I love making videos more than anything. I joined a print journalism class in my senior year of high school because I had extra room in my schedule, and I’m really glad that I did. I really enjoyed giving people a platform to tell their stories, and I decided to continue pursuing journalism in college. I chose to do DTC as my second major because it allows me to make creative videos and express myself artistically.
My most recent project is a short documentary about pyrotechnicians that will be airing on PBS and NWPB sometime early this year. It took me about a semester to make, and I’m super proud of how it turned out. In the future, I would love to work on more long form videos. Some day, I  would like to make a feature length movie or documentary. I could see myself getting into documentary movies or fiction. I’m really interested in the horror genre. My favorite movie is Hereditary by Ari Aster.
In my free time, I’ve been teaching myself how to fly racing drones, or First Person View drones. Unlike many other types of drones, FPV drones are flown through Virtual Reality. Piloting the drone through VR gives you more control over the drone, which allows the pilot to fly faster and more acrobatically than traditional drones. FPV drones are much harder to fly than traditional drones, so it took me a long time to teach myself to fly. I’ve practiced flying for over 600 hours on a drone simulator. I like drone racing for fun, but in the future I would like to fly FPV for movies and real estate.
I chose this course because I needed an upper level elective credit and mobile media sounded interesting. I’m hoping to learn more about how to utilize social media effectively. before the end of the semester, I hope to get my commercial drone license and more experience posting online.
