This was the article I chose to read this week. It was a very interesting article and made me look at smartphones a bit differently. I never really thought about how some religions and groups of people might think of cellphones and smartphones. I do not know much about the Amish religion or ultra-orthodoc Jewish religion but it was interesting to learn how they are semi similar when speaking about phones. It seemed like they both had their own ways of talking about how scary or “Impure” these devices are and how they both see them for use in different ways. I have never really looked at the smartphone or cellphone as impure. I can see though how maybe the way some people use the devices to do impure things is scary. It is also intriguing to me how these people are completely surrounded with technology and they do not want to use them. The only things I have learned about the Amish are from the media and things you see on the TV. I'm not a religious person so it has not been a priority of mine to learn about different religions. But now after reading this article it is very interesting how these people cope with the ever changing world around them. Also, I find it crazy that there are groups of people in our world that are so deeply invested in their religion that they never change. I guess maybe that is why I am not a religious person, maybe if I was I would understand better.
I do somewhat understand their sense of scarcity for the cellphone and smartphone. Not knowing what these devices can get you into when you have never used something like it before. When you are only used to traditional ways and having your comfort, it can be scary to learn something new. I also thought it was interesting that the article mentioned kosher cell phones, I have never heard of this before and it was something new I learned.
Overall, I thought it was an important article to read and learn how other types of people see these devices. As the world progresses, for myself it is just something I do not think too much about and I greatly benefit from most of it. For people like the Amish or Ultra-Orthodox Jewish people it is a great concern for them. It is hard for me to wrap my head around the different worlds we live in but I guess that is the great thing about life.
