This article spoke on how the evolution of media has changed over years since the 1980s- 1990s. The writer mentioned how post war times we would get all of our information about the environment around us or worldly news through the printed paper, then eventually on our local news channels but now we all consume information from social media, our mobile smart phones. The writer also spoke on how there aren't really any guidelines on how major companies control social media, who is posting and what is being posted.
This article wanted the reader to understand the progression of media and how it makes people globally connected. It also spoke about the debates of globalization from anthropology, sociology, political science in international relations.
I thought that it was interesting how the writer spoke about the power the media has and those who influenced it on society. The writer mentioned how Trump and Brexit political runnings and presidency really ignited the ways people were communicating through social media. They mentioned how the miss information and malice speaking on social media posts was a new form of communications from those who are in leadership positions. I thought it was really interesting that the writer brought up these examples from the last few years in this research. The writer also mentioned how Google and Facebook are major contributors along with other social media where people get their information but it has come to light that a lot of misinformation has been shared which has caused social disruption. As a college student who has been taking courses in communications the last five years or more has been really interesting watching the evolution and changes of social media. How people use social media and taking a step back to see how it is changing the people around me and society.
I do agree with the writer that we are treading in unknown territories and it will be interesting to see how this social media progresses, how some forms of media have died or are not in use anymore and how the people in charge will make change or continue to do harm. A lot of information on social media and it’s psychological effects have been arising and especially after this pandemic that we’re currently in. I think a lot of people use their mobile phones, social media and entertainment to escape from reality even though all of these are examples of our reality. Along with social media‘s algorithms that continue to tune into the consumer making them want to come back even more, I think it’s really important that people be aware of the effect this can have on them.
To conclude this article was very interesting to read about and it was honestly somewhat hard to digest. I had to go back a few times to reread certain parts because I could not understand what the author was trying to say. I feel like there could’ve been an easier way of explaining this research but I get that there is a lot of background information that needs to be explained. I definitely think I got the general gist of this article but I’m still a little bit confused myself. After reading this article on the history of media, how it affects globally to infrastructures, the public and everyday life, it truly made me stop and think more about how I'm consuming media and how I help contribute to it as well.
