The article “How different publics think about AI and its social impacts” written by Luye Bao examines the possible effects that artificial intelligence could have on our society.
It analyzes how people will differ in how they see it as it grows, and I think it is going to be something that people will be extremely passionate about.
The way I view it, when artificial intelligence really gets going and becomes more prevalent it will have a COVID vaccine type of separation between people.
People are either going to be heavily for it or against it and it is going to cause major issues.
AI is already relevant in today’s world, but it is going to get way more intense in the near future. When it starts to take jobs from people things will really intensify.
Different states will take different sides and create laws that either allow this or not. It is going to put an insane amount of power into people’s hands as they decide a robot is more valuable than an actual human.
I think it could get as extreme as people rioting and protesting in the streets because if corporations like McDonalds and Starbucks figure out how to operate without humans then millions of jobs will be lost and leave people unemployed.
The concerning thing is that it is coming in the near future. It all come down to the first corporation that decides to give it a try. They will take an initial backlash but once people realize that their Big Mac tastes the same, they will forget who is serving.
If McDonalds manages to pull it off and see increases in profit, then others will do the same and that’s where I see potential chaos arising.
Sides will be formed, and the outcome is unknown. I think it is inevitable. All these massive enterprises care about is growth and how they can make as much money as possible.
I personally think it will end up being a negative to society as jobs are already scarce at the moment. It will create a huge distrust amongst people in this country and the result is unknown.
AI could also be a major positive when thinking about how it could impact medicine and other health related things such as being a 24/7 nurse to someone in a retirement home or hospital, but that again takes jobs away from someone else.
It is a crazy thing that is being developed and I am terrified of the outcome.
